HUMIRA: The Miracle That Wasn’t

I once thought this was a miracle cure for my autoimmune problems. One jab and the pain in my joints would go away so fast that I’d forget about them in a few days!

Sadly it’s not. With each dose I’m starting to feel some unintended side effects like redness, swelling and itching that spreads down from the injection site these days. Although they go away in a few days, they are getting worse with each jab. I shudder to think what additional side effects I might get in subsequent doses.

I guess I should have seen this coming… injecting such a strong immuno-suppressant was bound to have some repercussions, especially since whatever I’m putting into my body is synthetic to begin with.

HUMIRA: What is it?

Marketed as Humira, the active ingredient is Adalimumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody. Monoclonal antibodies are proteins that recognise and bind to other unique proteins. Adalimumab binds specifically to Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNFalpha), which is present at increased levels in inflammatory diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis (my diagnosis), Psoriatic Arthritis, Psoriasis, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Western medicine is very well equipped to treat acute diseases and symptoms but not when it comes to chronic disease. This jab is a perfect example to illustrate this.

2 months after not taking a jab and my symptoms flare up again. Apparently all it does is suppress the symptoms but do nothing to treat the root of the problem.

My Rheumatologist is very quick to suggest various pills and medication but when I ask him how I can prevent a future flare up, he doesn’t have an answer. Each time I ask him if changing my diet or some aspect of my lifestyle might help, or of the latest treatments I’ve discovered like HDCs, he says, “You can try but I don’t think it will make a difference.” It’s almost as if it’s just a job to him and he has no interest in finding a cure, just treating symptoms. 😀

That’s why I’ve never stopped searching for alternative forms of treatment and self-experimenting on myself. Throughout all this, I’ve come to realise the importance of a nourishing whole foods diet, adequate sleep, staying active, stress and emotional management and so much more.

Someday I hope to stop taking these jabs completely and teach and inspire others in the same boat to help them heal themselves the way nature intended.
