Fruit and the Human Brain

Recently I’ve been on a roll of watching Ted talks on YouTube. This started because I wanted to maximize the 2 hours or more time I spend almost everyday in the kitchen cooking 😅

And because I’ve started going Vegan quite recently too, I’ve been fascinated by the talks related to veganism and our health and the health of our environment.

YouTube has picked up on this too and keeps recommending me Vegan related clips… 😑

This one is the latest fascinating video I’ve watched.

The most striking piece of knowledge I’ve garnered from this talk is how the theory of the size of human brain evolution due to us consuming more meat (esp cooked meat) is being challenged by the work of Tony Wright.

Going back hundreds of thousands of years ago, there was a time when our brains underwent a sudden and rapid expansion in size and complexity.

Tony purports that it was because our ancestors in the african savanna started developing a unique taste for fruits! Something which the other “apes” did not like as much as they preferred the other more fibrous, cellular vegetation.

Interestingly, this accelerating expansion suddenly stalled and started regressing about 200,000 years ago! Yes, our brains have been shrinking ever since!

Could it be because they discovered fire and so could cook the meat we scavenged? In the video, Kerry talks about how unlike Chimpanzees, we do not make enough enzymes to digest raw meat thus we are evolutionary not equipped to process meat.

Then again, what about sushi and all that raw fish that many cultures have been eating?

Well, more food for thought!
