Time to Think

Dear reader,

Today marks the end of my exams for the year! 🎉

Somehow it feels like a significant milestone for me – marking the completion of my first year of Naturopathic studies here in New Zealand.

I feel like I should have some sort of celebratory ritual to commemorate occasions like this! Kinda like a happy closure to the school term.

Back home I guess we’ve just go out with our close friends in uni for a meal. But here I guess our uni bonds aren’t so close and initially I was just thinking of watching some anime or playing a computer game or just doing nothing and watching the sunset by the beach to relax.

Then as I put my textbooks away, I suddenly felt like doing some reflection.

Actually this feeling has been welling up inside of me since the previous term break we had 2 months ago.

In my journal, I’ve been asking and writing questions to myself like:

What am I doing?

Where have I been?

Where am I going?

Where do I want to go?

What am I doing now that’s taking me there?

Questions like this about life and whether I’m spending my time and energy fruitfully.

On things that bring me closer to my dreams and aspirations.

On people and relationships and activities that I truly want to be with or be a part of.

Basically, I feel its really important to take some time off to reflect on these questions.

And I find the best way to do this is by writing them down with pen and paper – I feel the act of writing allows you to slow down your thoughts and gain clearer thinking. You can’t write as fast as you think and often you’d only write what is important and honest to yourself in a personal journal.

So there you have it!

Taking some time to reflect and think (on paper).

I think I’ve spontaneously created my own little post-exam ritual! 😄

Something to provide closure to the stresses of the academic term.

Something to provide grounding for myself, reassuring myself that where I’m at and what I’m doing is worth it.

And something to keep me going, to keep that light at the end of the tunnel burning.

Do you take time to think?
