Following up on my previous post on “First, Do No Harm”, are you aware of the adverse effects of many pharmaceutical medications?
Aka “side effects”, many are avoidable and/or unnecessary 🤕
What are they?
“Any response to a drug that is noxious, unintended, and which occurs at doses normally (and appropriately) used for the prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy of disease”World Health Organization, 1984
They range from mild symptoms like rashes, nausea, heartburn, constipation, dizziness and sleepiness to more serious ones like delirium, sedation, ulcers, internal bleeding, electrolyte disorders, depression, allergic reactions, cardiac dysrhythmias and ultimately death.
Older folks are at greater risks as many have chronic medical problems, concurrent disease and are on multiple drugs (polypharmacy).
It’s sad but most doctors don’t have the time to go through the long list of potential adverse effects of your medication.
But did you know that there is an easy way to find this out for yourself?
Simply Google the name of your medication followed by “data sheet”.
(👉🏻 see images below)
The first link is often a PDF of the data sheet. Just check that it’s the right medication name and dose (sometimes it’s a different brand name). Then scroll through the sections on:
- Warnings & Precautions
- Undesirable effects
That will give you a rough idea.
🌿Don’t forget the option of Naturopathy & Herbal Medicines which generally have little to no adverse effects if prescribed by a qualified and experienced practitioner.
❗️ Always consult your health care professional before deciding to alter/change any medication ❗️
Should you decide to seek alternatives like Herbal Medicine, a naturopath and medical herbalist is a qualified health professional that can work with you on lifestyle counselling, nutritional and herbal medicine.
Have you had any experience with adverse effects?
Love, Peace & Health always
